Music Intro    Songs/Players    Scenario

As the time to proceed to the grounds nears, the group exits to the street. There they musically call everyone to the task of carrying the body, now elevated in a box on stilts, to its final grounds. This task takes energy and the correct pacing of rather large crowds and carrying a body on stilts through the streets of Bali takes effort. All this drama is driven by the gamelan ensemble who may intensify the music as needed to drive the crowds from behind making sure the correct pace is followed. The music serves to keep people focused, energized, and to alert the community to the occasion.

Arriving at the cremation grounds the musicians pause and find shade as the body is unwrapped and witnessed for the last time. As the burning begins the gamelan group plays softer music that is meant to protect and calm the deceased leading the soul to a swift and safe rebirth. For financial reasons, often more than one family will be using the cremation grounds in a day, so it is common to hear other gamelan groups scattered about the grounds. Together they create a shimmering soundscape as the billows of smoke rise.
